Video Case Study: Asbestos Removal at Millennium Mills

Posted on in Company News

We are delighted to release a video case study that captures one of the largest asbestos removal projects in the UK, at the famous Millennium Mills on London’s Docklands.

We were commissioned by The Silvertown Partnership as Principal Contractor, as part of the £3.5billion Docklands Silvertown Regeneration project to oversee the process of returning the Millennium Mills building back to its original structural shell. We successfully removed a range of hazardous materials, using specialist techniques and ensured that many of the original building features could be retained. Amongst other waste and recyclables, this resulted in the removal of over 660 tonnes of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) over a 10 month programme period.

Large Scale, complex project challenges met

The video demonstrates the wide range of processes and activities involved with an asbestos removal project of this size and complexity and shows how Millennium Mills preserved its distinctive identity within the Docklands landscape. The successful conclusion of this asbestos removal phase by Rhodar completes stage-one of the redevelopment of this historic site and is a key step towards the realisation of the overall Silvertown docklands vision over the next decade.

Jason Davy, Managing Director, Rhodar said:

“This has been a fantastic project for Rhodar. We are proud to be responsible for one of the biggest asbestos removal jobs in the UK, especially at such a prestigious and iconic location. We chose to capture the intricate processes applied on site via this video, to demonstrate our multi-disciplinary capabilities on such a large-scale complex project.”

Client testimonial:

"The Silvertown Partnership and the GLA appointed Rhodar, in 2014, to remove all asbestos-containing material from Millennium Mills, a derelict flour mill originally constructed in the early 1900s. The refurbishment of the Mills is the flagship of the first phase of the £3.5bn redevelopment of Silvertown.

From the outset of the project, Rhodar's attitude, application and execution has been excellent. These attributes are visibly present from the senior management through to the site labour team.

Rhodar's detailed pre-tender research gave them an intimate understanding of the complexities of the contract, which was reflected in their tender submission and their subsequent interview process. This, combined with their industry-leading knowledge and proactive approach to Health and Safety, was critical in the awarding of the contract.

Adopting the role of Principal Contractor, Rhodar has consistently managed to apply their own rigorous standards across a range of sub-contractors, giving the entire labour force a harmonious appearance, inclusive of the management of Health and Safety.

Without exception, Rhodar has approached this project with a refreshing 'can do' attitude. From challenging logistics and technical robustness to community involvement and accommodating numerous stakeholder site tours, nothing has been too much trouble for the site team. They have been a credit to the industry and a pleasure to work with".
