Insulation Operative

We are looking for an Insulation Operative to conduct work on a secure site near Reading.

Salary: £20 per hour

The Insulation Operative is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing thermal and acoustic insulation on pipes, ductwork, vessels, and other mechanical systems. The role ensures energy efficiency, temperature control, condensation prevention, and personnel protection, following project specifications and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Measure, cut, and fit insulation materials (e.g., mineral wool, fiberglass, foam, calcium silicate) to mechanical systems, ductwork, and pipework.
  • Install protective finishes such as aluminum, stainless steel, or PVC cladding and vapor barriers.
  • Prepare work surfaces by cleaning and removing old or damaged insulation.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and insulation specifications.
  • Secure insulation materials using wires, bands, adhesives, or mechanical fasteners.
  • Ensure installations meet required thermal, acoustic, and fire protection standards.
  • Assist with inspections and testing of insulation systems to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Adhere strictly to company safety policies, including safe handling of materials and working at height or in confined spaces.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed and report progress or issues to the supervisor.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Insulation and Building Treatments (preferred).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an Insulation Operative, Lagger, or similar role.
  • Knowledge of insulation materials, cladding systems, and installation techniques.
  • Ability to interpret and follow technical drawings and site specifications.
  • Familiarity with safe work practices and health & safety regulations.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong practical and manual skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physically fit for manual labour and comfortable working in challenging environments.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience on a Nuclear site
  • CSCS Card or equivalent site safety certification.
  • Experience in industrial, petrochemical, or HVAC insulation projects.
  • Knowledge of scaffolding safety and permit-to-work systems.
