Embankment West
In November 2017, Rhodar began work on the strategically important Embankment West development site, close to Manchester city centre. This was a £1.75 million project, with Rhodar appointed as asbestos removal, demolition and remediation specialist for the essential enabling works phase.
Situated directly adjacent to Salford Bridge and the River Irwell, in close proximity to Manchester Cathedral and Manchester Arena, the Embankment site covered an expansive 7,500sqm.
The vaulted brick structure, formerly the Exchange Railway Station, had come to be used as a car park. Following its purchase, the developer’s plan was to convert the site into three mixed-use tower blocks directly adjacent to Manchester City Centre. This formed part of Salford Council’s Greengate Regeneration Strategy, involving the development of over three million square feet of commercial, retail and residential space.
Rhodar was appointed under Principal Contractor, Murraywood, to take the Embankment West site through a regenerative process that would see it transform from multiple brick-built arches to a development-ready platform for future planned construction works.
Working for the end client, Affinity Living, over a six-month period, Rhodar was required to carry out the initial asbestos removal, removal of the overburden, subsequent demolition and follow-on ground remediation as a comprehensive, enabling works package.
