Darwin Tower
Rhodar completed the £3.4m Darwin Tower demolition project, a prominent structure on the University of Edinburgh's King’s Buildings campus, as part of the university’s long-term infrastructure upgrade.
Procured through the Crown Commercial Services Framework, this project involved the careful dismantling of a building constructed with a partial concrete-encased steel frame and precast floor planks.
The tower was dismantled in a top-down sequence using a static tower crane. Works commenced with the removal of rooftop plant rooms and communication equipment, followed by stripping of roof coverings to expose the structural elements. The dismantling sequence was repeated floor by floor, with the propping system progressively repositioned as dismantling works progressed.
A fully wrapped scaffold system enclosed the structure in acoustic shrink wrap to control dust, reduce noise, and provide containment. This controlled environment minimised environmental impact on the campus and surrounding community. The scaffold enclosure was also dismantled progressively in line with the demolition sequence to maintain safe access and containment.
Advanced techniques including reverse construction, diamond wire sawing, and stitch drilling, combined with robust dust, noise, and vibration controls, ensured efficient dismantling while safeguarding surrounding structures and minimising disruption to university activities and local residents.
