Churchfield Building

The Churchfield Building, constructed in the 1930’s, was part of the original hospital development on the site. However, it had become outdated and unsuitable for conversion to meet the demands of a modern hospital.

Rhodar completed the soft strip and full demolition of the iconic three-storey London yellow brick building in September 2024. The demolition was carried out using the top-down method, preserving the main bricks from this historic structure for reuse in future projects.

We collaborated early with the local scaffold contractor, who erected a full-height scaffold on the two sides and rear elevation of Churchfield. The scaffold was later modified to align with Rhodar’s proposed and agreed demolition method.

The soft strip of the Churchfield Building involved the careful removal of non-structural elements, such as fixtures, fittings, partitions, ceilings, and flooring. This process focused on efficiency and safety, ensuring the preservation of key structural components while safely clearing hazardous materials.

The new three-storey structure will feature two operating theatres on the ground floor and 48 beds across the upper two floors, enabling the hospital to perform an additional 5,600 operations annually.

The demolition of the Churchfield building marked a significant milestone in the Trust’s ongoing commitment to enhancing patient care through improved facilities. Despite the challenges of demolishing a building in close proximity to live hospital services, the project was executed efficiently, meeting all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
